In the form of a train-the-trainer “boot camp”, UL’s Fire Safety Research Institute (FSRI) enhances firefighter safety, situational awareness, and fireground decision making by teaching the application of fire dynamics fundamentals to fire service leaders and instructors to support the application of research results in everyday firefighting. The curriculum and delivery of the Fire Dynamics Boot Camp course consist of classroom sessions, lab activities, fire ground demonstrations, supplemental online resources and panel discussions with researchers and fire officers that have incorporated research results into their department.

The research findings presented during a Fire Dynamics Boot Camp are presented in a manner for leaders and instructors to consider as validated findings on fire dynamics to improve firefighter performance on the fireground. By applying fire dynamics concepts to what they see, their available resources, and current staffing and equipment, firefighter safety and efficiency is increased.

Fire Dynamics Boot Camps are currently being delivered regionally with support of the DHS FEMA Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program. This will be expanded in the future along with online resources that will be available to the fire service to support local implementation of the train-the-trainer materials.
