Four toolkits are currently available on the FSA Resource Library:
Hands-On Training Toolkits
- Overview
The Fire Safety Academy offers a growing collection of hands-on training toolkits designed to help instructors and firefighters bring fire science and fireground tactics to life. These toolkits are the next step after classroom instruction, delivering practical, scalable exercises to reinforce key concepts through demonstration and application.
Each toolkit includes demonstration videos, participant guides, lesson plans, instructor handouts, and instructor videos that support the teaching and adaptation of the materials. These resources are designed to help instructors deliver impactful training sessions.
Expanding Firefighting Training with Scalable, Evidence-Based Toolkits
Tabletop Investigations
Use simple items to demonstrate foundational fire dynamics concepts, such as how materials burn and how heat transfers during different fire scenarios.
Class B Flow Path Prop
Visualize how fire behaves in compartments and reacts to firefighting interventions.
Dollhouse or Reduced-Scale Fire Behavior Prop
Illustrate how fire and smoke behave in realistic, small-scale scenarios.
Hose Stream Mechanics
Teach essential fireground techniques for quickly and efficiently applying water to suppress fire and save lives. Hear from the fire service about how this toolkit has enhanced their training programs and improved fireground operations.
The collection of toolkits is interconnected and, when used together, offers a progressive learning experience. Instructors are encouraged to use them in sequence to build knowledge step by step, but the multimedia materials are flexible enough to be used independently based on training needs and department priorities. Instructors can choose to build the props and run the demonstrations themselves, or simply use the training videos as standalone lessons. The goal is to make fire science and tactical understanding accessible, adaptable, and actionable.
“We designed these resources to empower instructors with the tools and confidence they need to deliver meaningful, science-based training. Whether you're building props yourself or using our videos, the goal is the same: to make fire dynamics tangible and actionable.”

Flexible Firefighting Training for Departments of All Sizes
Built to support firefighting training in departments of any size, the toolkits can be adapted to fit a wide range of training environments. They help instructors prepare with confidence, bring fire science to life through hands-on learning, and ultimately shape the success of the firefighters they train.
