A tactical consideration is an evidence-based concept for the fire service to consider implementing into their department to enhance efficiency, effectiveness, and increase knowledge to accomplish their mission. Tactical considerations are meant to inform, not replace local standard operating procedures. Each situation is unique, requiring different tactical choices to achieve the incident priorities. A tactical consideration is not policy. It is not a specification on how to enact or carry out a specific tactic.
The application of tactical considerations depends upon many factors such as:
- Building structure and geometry.
- Capabilities and resources available to the responding fire department(s).
- Availability of automatic or mutual aid.
FSRI’s goal is to provide information and the context from which the tactical consideration was derived, and the fire department provides their context to bring it all together. Both are necessary for a positive impact on the local fire service.
Through a combination of data from the Fire Safety Research Institute (FSRI), part of UL Research Institutes, experiments and vast experience of our project technical panels, several consistent themes have emerged that may be helpful to the fire service. Our Tactical Considerations Program consists of a series of videos that encapsulates each of these themes in a short video and compliments our training and other resources from FSRI research.
