Fire Prevention Week 2023 PSA Stay Aware Cook with Care
FSRI Launches Annual Public Fire Safety Education Campaign for Fire Prevention Month

Cooking safety starts with YOU! Pay attention to fire prevention.

As with previous years, UL’s Fire Safety Research Institute (FSRI) is leveraging Fire Prevention Week (FPW) as a springboard to engage stakeholders at a time when fire is a focal point for the media and fire safety community.

This year’s FPW week theme, set by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), is “Cooking safety starts with YOU! Pay attention to fire prevention.” To amplify this important message, FSRI’s campaign is anchored on a new public service announcement (PSA) that outlines tips on ways to “Stay Aware and Cook with Care.”

Some of the cooking specific messages shared throughout the week will be:

  • Stay in the kitchen while you are cooking.
  • If you leave the kitchen for even a short period of time, turn off the stove.
  • Keep anything that can catch fire — oven mitts, wooden utensils, food packaging, etc.— away from your stovetop.

These messages tie closely to our core fire safety messages for the public such as:

  • Have working smoke alarms properly installed in your home
  • Create and practice an escape plan
  • Close Before You Doze
