UL Research Institutes Releases NEW Online Training Helps Firefighters Explain the Research Behind Public Safety Messages

March 25, 2025

ULRI’s Fire Safety Research Institute (FSRI) shares the science that drives public safety messages for more effective fire safety education.

March 25, 2025 (Columbia, Maryland) – Fire Safety Research Institute (FSRI), part of UL Research Institutes, announced today the release of the new Tactical Considerations for Research-Based Public Fire Safety Education online course. This online firefighter training helps the fire service and fire safety educators explain the science behind fire safety messages for the public.

Firefighters are increasingly asked to be safety educators in their communities. Whether it is during school visits, home safety inspections, or even casual conversations with community members, firefighters’ roles make them a credible and powerful voice for fire safety. Leveraging learnings from this course, firefighters will be able to confidently step into the role of community educator and better prepare their communities to prevent fires before they start.

The course will enable firefighters to explain complex fire science topics in simple relatable terms, dispel common misconceptions about fire behavior, and use evidence-based fire safety messages to drive home life-saving strategies. This understanding will help firefighters translate everyday interactions with civilians into educational opportunities and bring important fire safety messages from FSRI’s award-winning public education campaigns to the communities they serve, including: Close Before You Doze, Take C.H.A.R.G.E. of Battery Safety, and Smoke Alarms Save Lives

“When we take a greater perspective of public safety education and connect smoke alarms, escape plans, closing doors, and battery safety, we’re really equipping our community with a much bigger toolbox to intervene before we arrive,” said Brian Brush, Training Chief of Midwest City Fire Department.
